Take if from us, English Wine, especially Organic English Wine is no joke. What better way to celebrate English Wine Week and ‘the start of summer’ than with a glass of wine from one of the fine producers we have right on our doorstep.
It’s often thought that it’s hard to ripen the quantities of grapes needed for commercial use so far north of the equator. Trust us it’s not – and it’s not just the south of England that produces wine, there’s a vineyard not 10 miles from Veo HQ (in Leeds!).
In the early middle ages, vineyards in the UK were extensive and as far as we know, successful. Wine production stopped for a while when England acquired Bordeaux in 1152 when Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine – who’d have known!
It wasn’t until the 1950s that wine production began again on a significant level down in sunny Hampshire. Today, England has a large number of vineyards dotted around the UK, mainly in the south. Most of these are located in Kent, East and West Sussex and Surrey and we believe there’s over 350 smaller vineyards now in existence across England.
English white wine and more recently English sparkling wine are the most produced. With grapes such as Seyval Blanc, Huxelrebe and Chardonnay being very popular, not to mention Ortega, Faber, Bacchus and Pinot Meunier.
Also with the great Pinot Noir grape being grown, English Rose wine is not to be missed.
At £13.99, this is a great value white. Blossom and lime aromas with a zesty freshness. A nice concentration of apple, this is English dry white wine at its best. Try this blind with friends and see if they can guess where it’s from!
Only £17.99 will buy you this beautiful, aromatic wine. A mixture of soft red fruits like redcurrant, raspberry and alpine strawberry combined with orchard fruit such as peach and apricot – A perfect match with lightly spiced foods.
At only £24.99, this is outstanding value. A light pink sparking with red-fruits including strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants and a touch of cranberry. The texture is lovely and creamy and the finish is fresh and clean. Good with or without food.
Finally a bit of a show stopper (at £24.99) that’s up there in terms of quality and can give our distinguished friends in France a run for their money. Made traditionally, using traditional grapes (with a little Seyval Blanc), it’s very much ‘Brut’ in style – Classic green apple character and a hint of fresh pear is highlighted by yeast and toast notes. It’s impeccably smooth with a very sophisticated finish.
Yes, imported wine can generally be a bit cheaper, but we believe that wines being produced in the UK are up there with the best and have a very unique crisp, very aromatic, fresh style that not only makes them very drinkable, but they are known to age better than some other fuller (white) wines.
