Why are not all wines Vegan?

Whilst wine comes from essentially one raw ingredient – the grape, a lot of wines are not suitable for vegans of even vegetarians.
The main reason is due to the finings or fining agents that are added to many wines. These fining agents speed up the clarification process.

What are fining agents and what do they do?

Fining agents are additives that may contain the following:

  • Gelatine (obtained from animal body parts)
  • Isinglass (obtained from fish bladders)
  • Albumen (egg whites)
  • Casein (milk proteins)Finings remove unwanted materials from the wine by attaching themselves to the particles to make them large enough to be filtered out.

How do you filter your wine?

Our suppliers do not use finings and instead use bentonite (an inert clay) or natural (gravitational) settling over time.

Are Vegan and Organic Wines poorer quality . . . and do they taste worse?

The simple answer is NO, not at all. Whilst you will always find wines more suitable to your taste, these wines are in no way inferior. We’d argue that as they are natural and pure, they are in fact better once you learn more about how most wine is produced.

Can I buy a case of my favourite wine?

Yes you can. You can mix and match your favourite wines, or order a case of just one type. See our Single Bottles page.
